My Counseling Experience
My training is in clinical mental health counseling. Initially, I was licensed to practice counseling in 1998 while living in Ohio. After moving to Maryland, I became licensed to practice in the state in 2009. Throughout my counseling career, I provided counseling services to adults, children, couples and families in the areas of bereavement, depression/anxiety, stress management, life transitions, and personal and/or spiritual growth. My areas of experience include: grief and bereavement, personal growth, anxiety and depression, stress management, and life and career transitions. I have worked in a variety of mental health settings including university and inpatient facilities.
Understanding the Counseling Process
In the counseling process, clients can be helped to understand themselves better, set personal goals, and be supported in the process of working toward those goals. Most clients can expect to benefit from counseling, making positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and ways of coping. Some, however, may not find counseling so beneficial. Even the most successful counseling and therapy may at times be painful or distressing, as the client deals with emotionally difficult issues. With therapeutic support, most clients manage difficult emotional responses that may arise. If the client and/or counselor decides this counseling practice is not appropriate for the client's needs, the client will receive assistance in contacting an appropriate referral source which can better meet their needs.
My Counseling Framework
I was trained in the practice of Reality Therapy. Taking personal responsibility, facilitating positive decision-making, and achieving goals are all salient components of Reality Therapy. My theoretical style is a combination of humanistic and cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as mindfulness work, depending on the needs of the client. Techniques include individual counseling (talk therapy), assessment and interpretation of assessments, provision of appropriate information and facilitation of decision making, and goal setting. Counseling sessions may be supplemented with homework exercises as needed.
